Actually It is Not All About YOU
For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.
Colossians 1:16 (NIV)
The Newlyweds is a show all about Nick and Jessica. They are followed everywhere, and we get to see the most interesting (and boring) parts of their lives. We see them making tuna, being followed by paparazzi, getting manicures, and eating out. It is all about them! The funny thing is that when I am watching the Newlyweds, I get into it.
Why don’t I see anything wrong with this picture? Maybe because deep down inside I want life to be all about me. I want the perfect job, the perfect family. I want “the American dream”. Don’t I deserve it? If I’m being very honest, I seldom think about what God wants. When things don’t go my way, I am upset with God. I figure I know best and wonder, “What does He think He is doing up there messing with my life anyway?”
News flash: LIFE IS NOT ALL ABOUT ME OR YOU. Colossians 1:16 says that EVERYTHING was made BY God and FOR God. What does it mean to be made FOR Him? Could it possibly mean that He has a grand plan, and maybe I don’t know what it is? Could it possibly mean that every little detail of my life has a greater purpose? If I was created for Him, maybe I should trust Him a little bit with all of the details of my life. Maybe I should let go of my agenda and my ideas of what life should be and ask God to show me what He wants for me.
Set aside your agenda. Set aside your ideas and expectations of what God is going to do. Take a few minutes today to pray for God to open your mind to the possibility of being created FOR Him. If life really is about Him and not you, how does that change the way you start each day?
