Once you start cleaning...
Once you start cleaning - you always find more dirt. Have you ever noticed that? While something may look clean from far away you get up close and notice that it is really covered in dust. I turned on my ceiling fan the other day for the first time this season and an actual dust bunny flew down off of it and landed in the corner. And when I got out the vacuum to clean it up I kept finding more and more bunnies lying around...behind the chair, under the couch, under the bed.
The same is true of my life. Once I start cleaning out my heart...digging into issues that have long been ignored or swept under the rug...I notice more and more issues coming to the surface. There are so many layers to our junk.
It is a little bit discouraging. It seems like a never ending task to clean it all out and make it sparkle.
But the good news is that God is not like a drill sargent giving us a white glove test to make sure we are clean enough to be in his army. We don't have to spiff and shine everything and hold our breath while he inspects our hearts...hoping He doesn't find something we missed.
God likes to clean up our junk with us. He rolls up His sleeves and grabs the dust mop. I actually expect He is like one of those annoying people who actually LOVE to clean. And the cool thing about that is that the job is easier when you are doing it together. It doesn't seem so overwhelming.
I kind of like to think of it like the show Clean Sweep on TLC. There is usually some unbelievably messy room involved and it takes a team of people going through and organizing, tossing and getting rid of clutter to make something beautiful and functional in the end.
God is like the organizer of the team. And He invites us along with Him to clean up our junk. We can ask friends and family to join with us...and hopefully in the end will have something functional and beautiful emerge from the mess.
And there is always another room waiting to be tackled. But it doesn't have to be done today. And it doesn't have to be done alone. And we don't have to emerge sparkly shiny people in the end. We just have to be real and willing to work together.
