Echoes in Eternity

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of
God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

This year my husband ran his second marathon. Whatever possesses someone to run a marathon I will never know. It is 26.2 long miles. I have a hard time even running a mile. But it is an inspiring thing to go to a marathon and watch what goes on. You see a variety of runners.

There are those who start off fast and run strong the whole way. There are first time runners who start off fast and end up walking and maybe even quitting. But the thing I love most about going to a marathon is watching the way people band together to help their friends run. It is not unusual to see a group of people in street clothes running alongside someone. I have even seen people almost carrying their friends. My favorite sight this year was a group of frat boys running with “friend of Jenny” t-shirts alongside a lone girl. They had gotten up early on a Sunday morning simply to support their friend.

Oftentimes I see life as a marathon. It takes endurance to run the race. It takes perseverance to live life the way God wants. It would be so easy to just give up. But the thing is...this race is important. In a marathon – you get a t-shirt and maybe a medal at the end. But in life…each footstep you take is lasting for eternity. And running right alongside you is Jesus every step of the way.

He is there to renew our strength and to keep us from lying down and quitting.
If you are physically able to do it…go for a long run or walk today. As you run, “fix your eyes on Jesus” (see verse)…and ask Him to show you the race He has marked out for you.
